Fault Finding & Repairs
How do I know if I have a problem with my electrical installation?
Hot switches or plug sockets
Whilst appliances may get hot during use, plug sockets should never get hot. If you notice heat from a socket then you have a problem. Do not use the socket until it has been sorted. The same applies to switches which may sometimes feel a little warm, especially dimmer switches, but should never be excessively hot. If there is any sparking, sign of scorching or a burning smell then you need to call an electrician immediately.
Flickering lights
If you have a light or multiple lights that are flickering or dimming, it’s a sign you may have a fault.
Repeated fuses blowing or circuit breaker tripping.
If using a particular appliance is tripping out your circuit breaker wherever you use it, there is probably a problem with your appliance. If the same socket is blowing fuses or tripping the circuit breaker whatever is used in it then it is a sign that you have a problem or your circuit may be overloaded.
Other common signs of an electrical problem
Unusually high electricity bills, bulbs frequently blowing, shocking from an outlet or appliance, buzzing, loose sockets and rodent activity near electrics are some other signs that your electrical installation needs checking over.
